New Overlook Cemetery

“New Overlook Cemetery” is just a stone’s throw up the road from the Old Overlook Cemetery. The oldest stone in this cemetery is that of Joseph Dodge (birth unknown – 1846).

The most notable resident to pass away was that of the Reverend George L. Fox. He was the pastor in East Concord and was one of the “Four Chaplains”. On the night of February 3, 1943, a loaded troop transport was torpedoed, without warning, by an enemy submarine in the North Atlantic and began to sink rapidly. In the resulting confusion and darkness some men found themselves without life jackets and others became helpless through fear and the dread of plunging into the freezing water. These four chaplains heroically and calmly moved about the deck of the Navy Ship called the Dorchester, encouraging the men and assisting them to abandon ship. After the available supply of life jackets had been exhausted, the “Four Chaplains” gave up their own to save the lives of others. As the ship went down, the “Four Chaplains” were seen holding hands and praying as the ship went down. There is a Historical Marker at the Methodist Church in East Concord, Vermont.
